Identify Fonts
Online Tools to Help Identify Fonts
Have a graphic, logo or other sample of a font but don't know what it's called? Check one of these sites to help.
- Identifont
1. Identify a font by answering a series of questions; 2. find a typeface by its name and see a sample. Helpful tool! - Linotype Font Finder: Autmatic Font Identifier
Identify a font by answering a series of questions about various letters. Quite a helpful tool to help you identify a font! - WhatTheFont
Upload a scanned image of a font at this site, and they'll tell you the closest match. Fabulous tool at MyFonts.com.
Software to Help Identify Fonts
- FontMatch
A desktop font identification solution that looks at the fonts on your computer. From their site:You can ask FontMatch™ to “look” at a sample and compare it to each font on your computer. FontMatch™ compares positive and negative space in a manner very similar to the way your eyes do, matching patterns to determine the best “fit.” After examining each font, it displays two images side by side: the one you supplied, and FontMatch's best answer. Or you can scroll through each of the answers, and see a percentage for each one that represents the closeness of the fit. Unlike the online font identification utilities, this program matches only to the fonts that you already have in your computer.
Looks like a fabulous program. Available for Mac and PC. [Software created by Stretched Out Software.]
Find Fonts Online: Font Specialized Search Engines
Check one of these font searches with keywords or if you know the name of a font but need the foundry.
- FontSeek
Try FontSeek's search engine to locate fonts. If you know the name, you can find which font foundry has it, and even compare prices within the search results. In testing this search engine, I found truly amazing search results that can save hours of scouring the Net. Also at the site is a listing of top ranked freeware/shareware font sites with links to them. - Graphic Obsession Font Search
Search by font name, by font foundry, by language, font style (display, gothic, serif, sans-serif, etc.), or by font theme (classic, fantasy, manuscript, dingbats, historical fonts). Review font samples with all the characters, type in your own words to see how it looks in a particular font, learn where to purchase the font. Very helpful.
